About PrescQIPP

Our mission is to help NHS organisations to improve medicines-related care to patients, through the provision of robust, accessible and evidence-based resources. We also provide a platform to share innovation, learning and good practice. As a Community Interest Company (a type of social enterprise), we operate on a not for profit basis for the benefit of NHS patients, commissioners and organisations.

PrescQIPP C.I.C is ISO 9001:2015 certified and registered with the BSI.

Our approach

Subscriber led

We are led by a community of Clinical Commissioning Groups, Health Boards and Commissioning Support Units that pay a modest annual subscription fee to fund our core work. They are also represented in our governance, and work with us to decide what we will deliver each year.

This funding models means that we make key resources like bulletins, briefings and toolkits freely available one year after they are published for subscribers to benefit as many people as possible.

In return, we provide subscribers with a whole host of extra support, helping them to get the most out of the resources they fund. Find out more about our community.

Quality assured

We produce all our resources using a transparent and robust quality assurance process. This includes quality and strategic peer reviews, and stakeholder consultation with relevant pharmaceutical companies, patient groups and voluntary sector organisations. History

The PrescQIPP NHS Programme was established as a programme in 2010 by the East of England Strategic Health Authority (SHA) to help deliver prescribing efficiencies. Having successfully helped Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) within the area, PrescQIPP was given exceptional funding to extend support across the Midlands and East SHA cluster.

The introduction of the Health and Social Care Act abolished SHAs and passed responsibility for primary care commissioning from PCTs to Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). In response to this restructure and loss of central funding, CCGs were asked if they would be prepared to continue to fund PrescQIPP’s work through a subscription model. The response was an overwhelming 'yes', and the number of commissioning organisations who have decided to join the community has grown ever since.

PrescQIPP now has a UK wide subscriber base that supports the majority of the UK patient population. With the support of our community, we became an independent social enterprise (community interest company limited by guarantee) in April 2016, enabling us to continue our work on a not for profit basis for the benefit of NHS patients, commissioners and organisations.

Funding

The majority of our funding comes from our subscribers - the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), Commissioning Support Units (CSUs) and Health Boards that pay a modest annual fee to access the full range of our resources. Through a democratic process, our subscribers tell us which resources they would like us to produce during the year.

Subscription income is ring-fenced for all work that is specifically for our subscribers. Our strategy and financial decision making is also overseen by our Council of Members, which is made up of senior-level subscribers from across the PrescQIPP community.

We are also sometimes commissioned by other NHS organisations to deliver specific pieces of work. For example, we have previously been commissioned by the Eastern Academic Health Science Network and the NHS England East Anglia Area Team to deliver prescribing related projects. The funding for this project work is ring-fenced for specific outcomes as agreed with those organisations.
