Increasing uptake of Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD) to Improve efficiency and sustainability in primary care

Derby and Derbyshire ICB

Project summary

The Derbyshire Prescription Service (DPS), in partnership with GP practices is delivering a system-wide initiative to increase the uptake of Electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD).

The project aims to reduce avoidable workload associated with repeat prescribing by transitioning suitable patients onto eRD, enabling prescriptions to be issued and dispensed automatically for a defined period without requiring repeated requests.

This supports a more efficient, sustainable prescribing model while maintaining patient safety and improving continuity of care.

The DPS works directly with GP practices to implement eRD. This includes meeting with practices to discuss the benefits and approach and providing training either face-to-face or via the NHS online learning academy.

Patients are systematically audited against suitability criteria by DPS staff, and where appropriate, patients are contacted to obtain consent. This work is undertaken entirely by the DPS team, placing no additional workload on GP practice staff and directly supporting improved productivity and workforce capacity. Patients are contacted by telephone in the first instance, with follow-up communication via AccuRx where required. Once consent is obtained, patients are set up on eRD and supported through the transition, including a follow-up AccuRx message.

A follow-up review and re-audit 9–12 months after implementation ensures eRD is embedded in routine practice, while maximising uptake and extending benefits to a greater number of suitable patients.

This proactive, structured approach enables consistent identification and conversion of suitable patients to eRD, supporting improved efficiency, reduced workload, and better use of prescribing resources across primary care.

By increasing the uptake of eRD, the DPS has supported a shift towards a more efficient, sustainable and patient-centred prescribing system, delivering long-term benefits for patients, practices and the wider NHS.
