Following discussions with our GP Practices regarding the challenges of managing chronic pain and advising patients that it was unlikely a medication would take away their pain our Prescribers felt support was required with regards to reviewing existing patients.
There was no single resource available, although there was lots of good information from a number of sources.
We developed the opioid resource pack to provide a summary of the evidence base along with resources to support Prescribers. This was shared during our medicines optimisation peer reviews in 2018 and allowed us to engage GP practices with regards to the review and management of existing patients prescribed opioids for chronic pain.
