Reducing broad spectrum antibiotics (2019)

Ipswich and East Suffolk CCG

Project Summary

The Medicines Management Team has used SystmOne and Emis Web clinical reports and EPACT-2 data to support a reduction in the prescribing of the broad spectrum antibiotics co-amoxiclav, cephalosporins and quinolones in general practice in line with the CCG Improvement and Assessment Framework (IAF) target. Practices were supported to review and act on the reports through a Local Enhanced Service.

Since the project began in October 2018, the proportion of the target antibiotics prescribed in the CCG has reduced from 11.14% in September 2018 to 9.66% in April 2019. At the same time, the total number of antibacterial items per STAR-PU has also reduced from 0.993 in September 2018 to 0.959 in April 2019. Feedback from the practices has all been positive, they have found the data provided useful and state that record keeping around the indication for antibiotics has improved.
