In order to improve access to hepatitis C treatment for prisoners at HMP Norwich, we created a novel pathway to streamline checks and delivery of direct acting antiviral treatment into HMP Norwich. This was completed in conjunction with a high-intensity test and treat program organised in line with Hepatitis C elimination initiatives.
Working with regional and national partners, our enhanced pathways resulted in 88% of Prisoners starting treatment within 7 days following the prison testing event. There was no increase cost as the service was delivered within usual services, but the optimisation allowed a successful HITT initiative.
Creative working with pharmacy homecare partners is necessary but worthwhile to ensure safe and timely supply routes when treating hepatitis C in prisons. Utilising MDT skills and frontloading the work contributes significantly to reducing the time to supply.
