Review of long term antibiotics in recurrent UTI and acne (2018)

Vale Royal CCG

Introduction

The worksheets attempt to tackle the over prescribing of antibiotics due to recurrent UTI infections in females and acne. This is intended to reduce antimicrobial resistance as a consequence.

How was the project established? / How is it currently being established?

It was recognised that a large number of antibiotics were being prescribed due to recurrent UTI or for acne and that clinicians needed guidance as to how to address these patient groups.

Recurrent UTI guidance was developed with microbiology and urology input then two worksheets were developed for the medicines management team MMT to implement in practices.

Now that national recurrent UTI guidance is being developed these worksheets could be adapted for use by others by incorporating the National guidance if local guidance doesn't exist.

Who are the main beneficiaries of the project? How would they benefit?

  • Patients due to a reduction in AMR and side effects of antibiotics
  • GPs due to a reduction in prescribed antibiotic items thereby aiding the achievement of quality premium targets and incentive payments
  • CCGs due to their qualifying for payment of their Quality Premium monies

What were the main outcomes and / or achievements of the project?

Please refer to above.

In addition local resistance data has started to show improvement.
