This project is based on the safety guidance from the MHRA on the gabapentinoids (<https://www.gov.uk/drug-safety-update/gabapentin-neurontin-risk-of-severe-respiratory-depression,2017> and <https://www.gov.uk/drug-safety-update/pregabalin-lyrica-reports-of-severe-respiratory-depression>, 2019), and the national guidance on drugs associated with dependence and withdrawal (March 2023).
The project involves the review and de-prescribing (if appropriate) in patients aged 65 and over, co-prescribed opioids and gabapentinoids supported by physio and psychosocial interventions.
The expected outcomes are reduction or termination in the daily doses of opioids and gabapentinoids for patient safety and improved quality of life to help address health inequalities.
