The project began from a need to improve medicines management and ordering of prescriptions in care homes. The covid-19 restrictions allowed less of a opportunity to visit care homes to provide support. The project aims were to create a system that was the same for every care home no matter what GP practice they would register their patients, make the process simpler, create a 'paperless'system, reduce burden on GP practice and community pharmacy, reduce errors and waste.
Whilst My Health Online wasn't initially created for use in Care Homes it is good tool in reducing medication overstock and waste.
The goal of MHOL was to provide a consistent, efficient, less time consuming and forward thinking approach to medication ordering in Care Homes. An evaluation when every care home is using MHOL should show a reduction in prescribing costs attributed to Care Homes and a decline in medication waste generated in Care Homes.
The use of a digital solution to order medication has increased access to medication and allows contactless ordering of medication. MHOL has reduced the number of missing items in the monthly order, providing a safer system, ensuring the home remains compliant with medication.
