The toolkit expands traditional homely remedy schemes to embrace the move from a pill for every ill to the purchase of over the counter medicines for the treatment of self-limiting and minor conditions as discussed in the NHS England OTC Guidance March 2018.
The MOCH team with the self-care task and finish group developed the toolkit, gained approval from the area prescribing committee, piloted it and then rolled out across the locality. This encompasses 158 care homes.
We followed a PDSA cycle to keep on track.
Optimising prescribed items off prescription and implementing the toolkit generated an average saving of £100 per year per resident, and cost care homes 25p per month per resident to fund a homely remedy scheme.
