B83. Asthma Focus, Bulletin and BriefingThe Asthma Focus bulletin and briefing discuss the implication of the recommendations in the National Review of Asthma Deaths (NRAD) report and also review the inhalers available and their place in therapy.

Audit ToolsThere are two sets of audit tools (plus searches for SystmOne and Emis) available. One looking at the risk factors identified in the NRAD report and the other looking at the use of high dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). Guidance on configuring a SystmOne report is also available.
London Respiratory Network High Dose Inhaled Corticosteroid CardThe BNF advises that patients on a high dose inhaled corticosteroid (over 800 micrograms BDP equivalent per day for adults) should be given a steroid card. The London Respiratory Network have devised a high dose ICS treatment safety card which can be printed off locally to give to patients. Links to the documents on the London Respiratory Network can be found below. These high dose ICS safety cave been endorsed by NHS England.
B61: MontelukastThe montelukast resources focus on the appropriate use of the leukotriene receptor antagonists (in particular montelukast which is used more than zafirlukast). In addition to the bulletin and briefing, an audit and patient letter is available to help implement change.
Tiotropium in Asthma
B125: Tiotropium in AsthmaThis resource looks at the place in therapy for tiotropium in asthma and compares to other treatments on the same step of the BTS guidelines. An educational slideset is available as a supporting tool for practice staff training.
B109: Inhaled Therapy in COPD - Bulletin and Briefing
The inhaled therapy in COPD bulletin and briefing has been updated to incorporate the new inhaled therapies licensed to treat COPD. The materials discuss the place in therapy of different inhaled therapies for COPD including the new therapies that have been launched recently. It also discusses the risks vs. benefits of inhaled steroids in COPD. The use of rescue packs is also discussed.

PrescQIPP has a wide range of data packs updated every six months and can be found in the data pack section of the data hub.
COPD Audit Tools
The audit tool has been updated. SystmOne, EMIS web and Vision searches are being developed to support this.
We have left the old SystmOne search here until the new ones are done as it can be adapted to incorporate changes.
Stepping Down Inhaled Corticosteroids in COPD
This set of resources have been developed to audit, review and step down inhaled corticosteroids in appropriate COPD patients. A supporting patient letter is also available.
COPD Patient Information
A self care patient information leaflet and a leaflet explaining to patients what a rescue pack is and how and when to use it are available here. Both these resources can be adapted before they are used.

PrescQIPP Award Winner 2013 - Optimising the Use of Inhalers in the Care Home Setting
This webinar was presented by Jackie Smith and Sharon Tansley, NHS Bedfordshire CCG, to present the 2013 PrescQIPP Award winning project on 'Optimising the use of inhalers in the care home setting'. This project was highly popular with the attendees at our annual event and innovation awards - and won the Frail Elderly Category award.
The project focused on optimising the use of inhalers in elderly patients resident in Care Homes through directly supporting both the patient and the carers. It was designed to evaluate the potential impact on the holistic health of these vulnerable people when one to one support is given to improve inhaler technique.The webinar is now available below (please note the quality of the main presentation is a little quiet in parts, however it is perfectly audible if you turn your volume up).
