Pathway Documents

The pathway documents place the inhaler products where they would fit on the British Thoracic Society (BTS) pathway. There are documents for each of the age categories on the BTS guidelines and an adaptable summary sheet for CCGs to insert their own local formulary choices. The summary sheets can be separated from the main documents if teams wish to use these to circulate to local practices.

Audit Tools

There are two sets of audit tools (plus searches for SystmOne and Emis) available. One looking at the risk factors identified in the NRAD report and the other looking at the use of high dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). Guidance on configuring a SystmOne report is also available.

London Respiratory Network High Dose Inhaled Corticosteroid Card

The BNF advises that patients on a high dose inhaled corticosteroid (over 800 micrograms BDP equivalent per day for adults) should be given a steroid card. The London Respiratory Network have devised a high dose ICS treatment safety card which can be printed off locally to give to patients. Links to the documents on the London Respiratory Network can be found below. These high dose ICS safety cave been endorsed by NHS England.

PrescQIPP Award Winner 2013 - Optimising the Use of Inhalers in the Care Home Setting

This webinar was presented by Jackie Smith and Sharon Tansley, NHS Bedfordshire CCG, to present the 2013 PrescQIPP Award winning project on 'Optimising the use of inhalers in the care home setting'. This project was highly popular with the attendees at our annual event and innovation awards - and won the Frail Elderly Category award.

The project focused on optimising the use of inhalers in elderly patients resident in Care Homes through directly supporting both the patient and the carers. It was designed to evaluate the potential impact on the holistic health of these vulnerable people when one to one support is given to improve inhaler technique. The webinar is now available below (please note the quality of the main presentation is a little quiet in parts, however it is perfectly audible if you turn your volume up). All NHS members of the site can now view the webinar below:
